Tehran Weighs Islamabad Talks

ISLAMABAD/WASHINGTON — The fragile 14-day ceasefire between the United States and Iran is teetering on the edge of collapse as President Donald Trump issued a stark military ultimatum ahead of Wednesday’s deadline. While diplomatic channels in Pakistan remain open, Tehran has yet to confirm the arrival of its delegation for a high-stakes second round of negotiations in Islamabad.

Trump: "The Military is Raring to Go"

Speaking Tuesday morning on CNBC’s Squawk Box, President Trump signaled a shift away from diplomatic patience, stating he does not favor an extension of the current truce set to expire on April 22.

“I expect to be bombing because I think that’s a better attitude to go in with,” Trump told interviewers, adding that the U.S. military is “locked and loaded” and “raring to go.” The President further intensified the rhetoric on Truth Social, accusing Iran of violating the ceasefire terms numerous times and suggesting that the U.S. is prepared to resume strikes on Iran’s energy infrastructure if a "great deal" is not reached immediately.

The Islamabad Standoff

Despite the aggressive posture from Washington, Vice President J.D. Vance is reportedly prepared to lead a U.S. delegation to Islamabad to attempt a breakthrough. However, the success of the summit remains in doubt.

Iranian state television issued an on-screen alert Tuesday stating that "no delegation from Iran has visited Islamabad so far." Reports from Tehran suggest a deep internal divide within the government. While some officials seek to avoid further escalation, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) is reportedly pressuring leadership to refuse talks until the U.S. lifts its naval blockade in the Strait of Hormuz.

“We do not accept negotiations under the shadow of threats,” stated Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Iran's parliamentary speaker, echoing Tehran’s long-standing position that it will not bargain under duress.

Rising Naval Tensions

The diplomatic deadlock follows a weekend of heightened maritime friction. The U.S. Navy recently seized an Iranian-linked container ship, a move the Pentagon defended as enforcement of existing sanctions but which Tehran has decried as an "act of piracy." This incident has served as a primary sticking point, with Iran demanding the vessel's release as a prerequisite for formal dialogue.

What’s Next?

As the clock ticks toward the Wednesday midnight deadline, the global community is watching Islamabad. If an Iranian delegation arrives within the next few hours, it may signal a last-minute reprieve. Without a confirmed meeting or a formal extension of the ceasefire, the region faces the immediate prospect of a return to active hostilities.
