India Strongly Rejects Dutch Criticism of Media Freedom and Minority Rights

India has strongly rejected concerns regarding press freedom and minority rights raised during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's official visit to the Netherlands.

The pushback came from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) after Dutch journalists questioned the Indian delegation at The Hague about purported remarks made by Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten regarding a slide in media freedoms and minority protections in India.

MEA Secretary (West) Sibi George dismissed the critiques, attributing them to a fundamental "lack of understanding" of India’s deeply rooted democratic and pluralistic fabric.

Key Rebuttals from the Ministry of External Affairs

1. Civilisational and Religious Pluralism

Deep Roots:

George highlighted India's 5,000-year-old history as a diverse civilization built on cultural, culinary, and linguistic variety.

Flourishing Faiths:

He noted that four major world religions (Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism) originated in India.

Safe Haven:

He stated that India is one of the very few countries where the Jewish community never faced persecution, while Christianity and Islam arrived and flourished centuries ago.

2. Demographic Arguments

Growing Minority Numbers:

The MEA pointed out that India's minority population has grown from roughly 11% at independence to over 20% today, calling it proof of a thriving, inclusive society.

Global Proportion:

"We are one-sixth of the total population of the world, but not one-sixth of the problems of the world," George remarked.

3. Media and Democratic Credentials

A "Noisy" Democracy:

Pointing to India's 900 million smartphones, the MEA stated that freedom of expression is fiercely exercised, making Indian democracy robust and inherently "noisy."

Economic Progress via Democracy:

The government emphasized that India has lifted millions out of poverty through purely democratic means and peaceful transfers of power, rather than authoritarian measures.

Diplomatic Context

Despite the brief friction during the media briefing, officials noted that the issue was not raised by Prime Minister Jetten during the formal bilateral meetings with PM Modi.

The trip concluded on a productive note, with both nations officially elevating their ties to a "Strategic Partnership" and signing pacts to boost cooperation in semiconductor supply chains, maritime security, clean energy, and migration.

Diplomatic Outcomes: Moving Past Friction

Despite the sharp exchange at the press pool, the issue did not appear to overshadow the formal bilateral engagements between the two heads of government.

Following their meeting, PM Modi and PM Jetten reaffirmed their commitment to a rules-based international order and officially upgraded their bilateral ties by adopting the ambitious Roadmap for the India-Netherlands Strategic Partnership (2026–2030).

The comprehensive roadmap establishes a time-bound action plan across several critical sectors, including:

High-Tech Collaboration:

A landmark commercial agreement between India's Tata Electronics and Dutch semiconductor giant ASML to support India's upcoming semiconductor fabrication plant in Dholera, Gujarat.

Green Energy & Sustainability:

The creation of a Joint Working Group on Renewable Energy to collaborate on green hydrogen, circular feedstocks, and climate-resilient agriculture.

Water Management:

The establishment of a new Centre of Excellence on Water at IIT Delhi, leveraging Dutch expertise to assist with the National Mission for Clean Ganga and urban river management.

While the Dutch leader later noted on social media that the two sides also discussed regional security and a long-running bilateral child custody dispute, the overall focus of the visit remained firmly anchored on deepening economic and technological dependency between New Delhi and The Hague.
