Meta Suspends Norwegian Journalist Helle Lyng's Accounts Following Viral Confrontation with PM Modi and Intense Backlash on X
OSLO / NEW DELHI — Norwegian journalist Helle Lyng has landed at the center of an intense international social media storm. Days after confronting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his state visit to Norway, Lyng announced that both her Instagram and Facebook accounts have been abruptly suspended by Meta.
The suspension followed days of relentless trolling, coordinated online attacks, and scrutiny from segments of Indian media and pro-government social media accounts on X (formerly Twitter).
The Inciting Incident in Oslo
The controversy began when Prime Minister Modi was walking off the stage alongside Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre following a joint press briefing. Lyng, a reporter associated with the Norwegian newspaper Dagsavisen, called out directly to the Indian leader.
"Prime Minister Modi, why don't you take questions from the freest press in the world?" Lyng shouted.
She later posted a video of the unscripted exchange on X, noting that while Norway holds the top spot on the World Press Freedom Index, India sits at the 157th position. The clip went viral instantly, generating millions of views and triggering a fierce political showdown back in India, with opposition leader Rahul Gandhi criticizing the Prime Minister for "running away" from unscripted media scrutiny.
Following the viral moment, the Indian Embassy in Oslo invited Lyng to an official press briefing. There, the situation grew even more tense. Lyng questioned Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Secretary (West) Sibi George, asking, "Why should we trust you? Can you promise you will stop the human rights violations that go on in your country?"
George firmly pushed back, defending India's massive democratic framework and robust constitution, while advising foreign reporters against relying on reports published by "ignorant NGOs."
Account Suspensions and "Chinese Agent" Accusations
By Wednesday morning, Lyng revealed on X that she had lost total access to her other primary social media platforms, sharing a screenshot of her Norwegian Instagram notice giving her 180 days to appeal the deactivation.

While Lyng cryptically remarked that losing her accounts was a "small prize to pay for press freedom," she also noted that she was investigating whether her accounts were targeted via a coordinated misuse of the platform's two-step verification security system. Meta has not yet issued an official statement regarding the exact cause of the suspension.
Social Media Backlash
Simultaneously, Lyng became the target of severe backlash on X. Sections of Indian media and right-wing commentators combed through her past journalistic work, unearthing older articles she had written about Chinese President Xi Jinping. On X, she was heavily trolled, with thousands of hostile users branding her a "foreign plant," a "spy," and a "Chinese proxy" deployed to disrupt the Prime Minister’s diplomatic visit.

Despite the heavy trolling, the global spotlight has dramatically amplified Lyng's digital footprint. Prior to the incident on Monday, her X account had fewer than 800 followers; within 48 hours, her follower count skyrocketed past 45,000 as international press freedom advocates rallied behind her. Lyng has since reached out to Indian opposition leader Rahul Gandhi on X, requesting a formal phone interview to discuss the fallout of the bilateral visit.
