BEIRUT — The tenuous silence over the Lebanese capital was broken on May 7, 2026, when Israeli airstrikes hit the southern suburbs of Beirut for the first time since a ceasefire was brokered last month. The strike, which targeted the Hezbollah-dense neighborhood of Dahieh, marks a significant escalation and threatens to derail ongoing regional peace negotiations.

The Strike and the Target

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed the operation, stating the strike successfully neutralized a high-ranking commander within Hezbollah's elite Radwan Force.  

Approval: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly gave personal authorization for the mission.  

Casualties: While Hezbollah has yet to issue an official statement on the death of the commander, local reports indicate heavy damage to residential structures and several civilian injuries.

The Scene: Images from the site showed massive plumes of smoke rising over the city's skyline, with rescue workers seen digging through the rubble of a collapsed multi-story building.

A Ceasefire on the Brink

The strike comes during a highly sensitive period. A ceasefire agreement, originally announced on April 17 and recently extended to May 17, was intended to facilitate a transition to long-term diplomatic talks.
