Shock Shift in TN: DMK Allies Push Governor
to Invite Vijay’s TVK to Form Govt
In an unprecedented turn in Tamil Nadu politics, several allies of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) have come out in strong support of actor-turned-politician Vijay, urging the Governor to invite his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), to form the government.
The state is currently gripped by a constitutional standoff following the 2026 Assembly elections, which delivered a hung assembly for the first time in decades.
The Numbers Game: A Fractured Mandate
In its debut electoral contest, Vijay's TVK has emerged as the single largest party with 108 seats in the 234-member house. However, it remains short of the magic majority mark of 118.
DMK Allies Break Ranks
In a surprising move, key constituents of the DMK-led secular alliance have pivoted to support Vijay, citing constitutional precedents.
CPI State Secretary M. Veerapandian argued that since TVK is the single largest party, the Governor is constitutionally bound to invite Vijay first. He referenced the landmark S.R. Bommai vs. Union of India case, stating that a majority should be proven on the floor of the House.
VCK President Thol. Thirumavalavan echoed this sentiment, accusing the Center of using the Governor’s office to delay the process and create political confusion.
MNM Chief Kamal Haasan lauded the "political maturity" shown during the deadlock, reminding the Governor that not inviting the single largest party would be a "disgrace to the State and a blow to democracy."
The Governor’s Stand
The Governor has so far resisted these calls, insisting on a "stable" government. Reports suggest the Governor has asked Vijay to produce formal letters of support from at least 118 MLAs before a swearing-in ceremony can be scheduled.
Currently, Vijay claims the support of 112 MLAs, including five from the Congress, who have officially split from the DMK alliance to back the TVK leader for the "welfare of the state."
"The people of Tamil Nadu have not granted a majority to any alliance, but they have clearly chosen TVK as the leading voice. To deny them the chance to prove their majority is to deny the people’s mandate." — Thol. Thirumavalavan, VCK Chief.
What’s Next for Tamil Nadu?
With the newly elected members unable to take their oaths, the state is in a legislative limbo.
The focus now shifts to the CPI(M) and other smaller parties who are holding internal committee meetings to decide their final stance. If Vijay can secure the support of just six more MLAs, he will become the first actor since M.G. Ramachandran to lead the state as Chief Minister in his debut run.
Will the Governor relent, or is Tamil Nadu headed toward a period of President’s Rule? Stay tuned for more updates.
