Suvendu Adhikari to be the First BJP CM of West Bengal

Suvendu Adhikari to be

the First BJP CM of West Bengal

KOLKATA — In a historic shift for Eastern Indian politics, Suvendu Adhikari is poised to be sworn in as the first Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Chief Minister of West Bengal. The development follows a high-stakes legislative meeting in Salt Lake, where party leadership officially designated the Leader of the Opposition as the face of the new administration.

A Seismic Shift in Power

The ascent of Adhikari marks the end of an era in Bengal politics. Known for his deep-rooted organizational strength and his pivotal role in the 2021 Nandigram victory, Adhikari has long been the spearhead of the BJP’s campaign against the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC).

The transition comes amid a period of intense political maneuvering. While official election results or floor test outcomes have solidified this path, the mood at the BJP headquarters on Muralidhar Sen Lane is one of unprecedented celebration.

Key Drivers of the Appointment

Sources within the BJP suggest that the central leadership chose Adhikari for three primary reasons:

Grassroots Connectivity: His ability to mobilize voters in the "Junglemahal" and Medinipur belts.

Administrative Experience: His previous tenure as a state minister, providing him with the necessary "bureaucratic shorthand" to run the state.

Political Symbolism: As the man who defeated Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in her own constituency in 2021, he remains the most potent symbol of the BJP's challenge to the TMC.

Insider of TMC: He has been in TMC but changed side in 2020. He knows TMC from inside.

He deserves: There is no alternative at least for the present.

Hindutwa Ideology:  He has openly given credit to Hindutwa for his victory both at Nandigram and Bhabanipur. His ideology matches with that of BJP and RSS.

The Road Ahead

Adhikari faces an uphill battle as he prepares to take the oath. The state is currently grappling with several critical issues that will define the early days of his premiership:

Law and Order: Addressing the persistent reports of post-poll turbulence and stabilizing the state's internal security.

Economic Reform: Courting central investments to revitalize Bengal’s industrial sectors, particularly in manufacturing and IT.

Social Welfare: Balancing the existing "Duare Sarkar" schemes with the BJP’s own "double-engine" development promises.

Reaction from the Opposition

The Trinamool Congress has remained defiant, with party spokespersons labeling the move a "temporary setback" and vowing to provide a "formidable opposition" in the Assembly. Meanwhile, supporters of Adhikari have already begun lining the streets of Kolkata with saffron flags, chanting slogans of "Ar Noi Annay" (No More Injustice).

"This is not just a change of government; it is a change of the very political culture of Bengal," Adhikari told reporters briefly outside his residence. "Our priority is to restore the glory of Sonar Bangla."

The official swearing-in ceremony is expected to take place at Raj Bhavan later this week, attended by senior members of the Union Cabinet.
