Ahead of the Monsoon Session of Parliament, Prime Minister Narendra Modi combined national celebration with sharp political satire. Addressing reporters outside Parliament, PM Modi highlighted the recent historic orbital launch by Hyderabad-based space startup Skyroot Aerospace, praising the young team that engineered the feat. In doing so, he delivered a witty jibe aimed at Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi.

The Jibe: "Not Talking About a 56-Year-Old Youth"

In his opening remarks, Prime Minister Modi celebrated India’s growing footprint in private space exploration, pointing out that the milestone was achieved by genuine Gen-Z and millennial talent:

"India’s youth have embarked on a new journey into space. I was told that the average age of the entire team working at the 'Skyroot' startup is merely 28 years. Young people like these have accomplished this feat. I am not speaking of a 56-year-old youth."

While PM Modi did not mention Rahul Gandhi by name, the reference was unmistakable—pointing directly to the 56-year-old Congress leader who has often been framed by his party as a leader of India's youth. The comment drew a sharp contrast between political branding and the real-world achievements of India's young engineers and entrepreneurs.

Skyroot Aerospace and the Historic Vikram-1 Launch

The praise comes on the heels of Skyroot Aerospace successfully launching its Vikram-1 orbital-class rocket under Mission Aagaman.

Founded by former ISRO engineers Pawan Kumar Chandana and Naga Bharath Daka, Skyroot has cemented its place as a pioneer in India's commercial space sector. Vikram-1, a 24-metre, four-stage rocket built with light-weight carbon composites, carried multiple payloads into low-Earth orbit.

Key highlights from the launch:

  • True Private Enterprise: Vikram-1 represents India's first privately developed orbital-class rocket.

  • Symbolic Payload: Alongside scientific payloads, the rocket carried handwritten postcards—including one from PM Modi featuring the words "Vande Mataram"—honouring the scientists and innovators behind India's space program.

  • Youth-Led Innovation: The average age of the core engineering and execution team at Skyroot is just 28 years.

Space Reforms on the "Reform Express"

PM Modi linked Skyroot's success directly to the government’s policy decision to open the space sector to private enterprise.

He noted that initial skepticism about deregulation has been put to rest by real achievements. "It is the result of the country boarding the Reform Express that India’s youth are able to show such great courage and achieve success," he stated, emphasizing that the potential of India's youth is "as boundless as space itself."

By framing Skyroot’s triumph as a triumph of real youth action, PM Modi set a high-energy tone for the parliamentary session, grounding national pride in tangible technological progress.
