India’s quest for strategic autonomy and ironclad national security has reached a significant milestone. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is preparing to test-fire three distinct interceptor missile variants under Project Kusha over the next 12 months.

Driven by top national priority under Mission Sudarshan Chakra, this Long-Range Surface-to-Air Missile (LR-SAM) initiative—popularly known as India's "Desi S-400"—is designed to provide a comprehensive, multi-tiered air defense shield over critical strategic assets and military formations.

What is Project Kusha?

Developed under the Extended Range Air Defence System (ERADS) program, Project Kusha is led by the DRDO with integration support from Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) and Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL).

Approved by the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) with an initial procurement clearance of ₹21,700 crore for five squadrons, Project Kusha fills the critical gap between medium-range systems like the MRSAM (70–80 km) and long-range imported platforms such as Russia's S-400 Triumf (400 km).

Existing Layered Grid:
[ Akash / VSHORAD ] ──> [ MRSAM (70-80 km) ] ──> [ Project Kusha (150-400 km) ] ──> [ S-400 / BMD ]

The 3 Interceptor Tiers: M1, M2, and M3

Project Kusha relies on three specialized interceptors sharing a common, highly agile kill vehicle but powered by distinct solid-booster configurations to neutralize aerial threats across varying distance bands:

Interceptor VariantOperational RangeTargeted Aerial Threats
Kusha M-1120 – 150 kmTactical fighter jets, attack drones, and low-RCS cruise missiles.
Kusha M-2250 kmHigh-speed stealth aircraft, loitering munitions, and standoff weapons.
Kusha M-3350 – 400 kmStrategic bombers, AWACS (Airborne Early Warning & Control), and spy platforms.

Key Advantage: Equipped with a hybrid RF/IR guidance package, high-rate datalinks, and hit-to-kill warhead capabilities, these missiles can intercept targets traveling at speeds up to Mach 5.5.

Mission Sudarshan Chakra: India's "Golden Dome"

The acceleration of Project Kusha is part of Mission Sudarshan Chakra—an ambitious national initiative aimed at creating a seamless, AI-enabled, network-centric air and missile defense architecture.

Strategic Imperatives Driving the Acceleration:

  1. Lessons from Standoff Warfare: Recent global and regional conflicts have demonstrated that modern battles are increasingly dominated by massed kamikaze drones, hypersonic glide threats, and saturation missile strikes.

  2. Network-Centric Integration: Kusha platforms will feed directly into the IAF’s Integrated Air Command and Control System (IACCS). This allows real-time data fusion from satellite surveillance, ground-based 3D observation radars, and naval units for automated threat prioritization and instant engagement.

  3. Indigenous Self-Reliance (Atmanirbhar Bharat): Unlike foreign platforms, Kusha allows India complete domestic control over software algorithms, electronic counter-countermeasures (ECCM), and continuous hardware upgrades.

What Lies Ahead?

With phased induction targeted between 2028 and 2030, Project Kusha will give the Indian Armed Forces an indigenous umbrella capable of safeguarding critical infrastructure, combat groups, and urban hubs against multi-directional air attacks. As DRDO moves forward with scheduled flight trials for all three interceptor variants, Mission Sudarshan Chakra is rapidly turning into an impenetrable reality over Indian skies.
